When you’re planning a wedding, as well as your all important wedding dress, you also have around 20 other people’s outfits to choose. Not only do they need to look and feel amazing, their outfits all need to complement each other too. Unless you’re a fashion industry expert, choosing a colour scheme and style that matches everyone from the tiny pageboy up to the mother of the bride and everyone in between is a terrifying task!
Or it was…
I took a browse around John Lewis’ wedding range this week and with so much choice; matching suits, dresses and accessories for each role was incredibly easy. I wanted to show you an easy guide to styling your entire wedding party in line with 2017’s most popular trends.
Brides of 2017 are choosing beautiful, classy bridal gowns. Right now strapless has been replaced with sleeved, high-necked gowns and intricate detailing has become a popular choice over large flowing skirts.
Bride style tip
The right shapewear and support bra can be a girl’s best friend, even more so on her wedding day when she will be the centre of attention for the best part of 12 hours. Support in the right places will give you the extra confidence boost. You can always take a second set of lingerie to change into before the end of the night.
Mother of the bride (and groom)
The mother of the bride will likely carry the most pressure when it comes to the perfect outfit. She will have a lot more choice when it comes to the colour and style whereas the rest of the wedding party will usually have their outfits chosen by the bride or groom. It’s still worth checking whether the bride wants her mother to colour coordinate with the rest of the bridal party or go for something completely different! Oh, and don’t forget the hat!
Mother of the bride style tip
If you are not wearing the same colour as the rest of the wedding party, incorporate the main colour from the bridesmaid’s dresses into your jewellery or accessories to create a sense of togetherness and unity in the wedding photos.
Styling the bridesmaids
Alternatively, go bold! With a glamorous and sophisticated wedding dress like those shown above, you can definitely throw some statement colours into the mix. Add some red carpet colours in such as red, gold or navy for that ultra glamorous look! You can always add a couple of the same colour flowers into your wedding bouquet to tie your looks together.
Bridesmaid Style Tip
If you do want mismatched bridesmaids’ dresses but are worried about choosing dresses that will clash, opt for a particular style dress and then select that dress in multiple colours as opposed to ordering different dresses completely. That way as the design is the same, the dresses will still create a uniform style, but your girls can still embrace their own, individual look.
Styling your Flower girls
Any little lady wearing one of these will look and feel like a princess all day long, though she will risk stealing all the attention for herself!
You’ll almost have more fun choosing your flower girl’s accessories than you will your own!
Flower Girls Style Tip
You don’t want your little flower girl getting cold, an ivory cardigan and tights will keep her warm and complete her look beautifully.
The groom and his groomsmen
There are no rules when it comes to shopping for the groom and his groomsmen’s suits. Some men will prefer to make it a manly shopping trip and go and choose for themselves, others would prefer to leave it to the bride to style them in line with the rest of the wedding party. Though as it can work out quite similar in price whether you hire or buy the men’s suits, it’s the perfect excuse to treat your man!
John Lewis make it easy to transform your groom and his men into prince charming, pair any of their suits with a cravat or coloured bow tie and they’ll do you proud. Don’t forget to plan for the season, a wool suit might be better for cooler months, whereas a pale linen suit is perfect for a Spring or Summer wedding.
Groom Style tip
If your groom wants to stand out from his best man and the other groomsmen, choose a different coloured shirt or add a waistcoat to his outfit.
Page boys / ring bearers
Brides of 2017 are styling their page boys in shorts, braces and bow ties for a smart summer look, whilst the timeless suit and tie remains a classic look for any time of the year.
Page Boy Style tip
Your little prince will look charming as ever is his little suit so don’t worry about working too hard making sure that his suit perfectly matches the others, let him be a different and celebrate his own role in the wedding.
